On Crappy Work…

This isn’t new—it’s made the internet rounds—but I know that watching it again today, in the middle of trying to get this project off the ground, I took a few more lines to heart. It’s always good to learn and relearn from those that have paid their dues to become great.

Here’s Ira. And, if you feel like you’re making work that doesn’t quite meet your own expectations, maybe watch the video again too.

For the first couple years that youre making stuff, what you’re making isnt so good… Its trying to be good, it has ambition to be good, but its not quite that good.

But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, your taste is still killer and your taste is good enough that you can tell that what youre making is kind of a disappointment to you… A lot of people never get past that phase and a lot of people at that point quit.

And the thing I would just like say to you with all my heart is that most everybody I know who does interesting, creative work, they went through a phase… And for you to go through it … youve got to know its totally normal and the most important possible thing you can do is do a lot of work.

Do a huge volume of work… Because its only be actually going through a volume of work that you are actually going to catch up and close that gap. And the work youre making will be as good as your ambitions.

Here’s to growing pains~!
